Honorable Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on March’2021 said that it is time to expand the agriculture sector to a global market for processed food through public-private partnership mode. Addressing a webinar on budget provisions for the farm sector, he stressed on the need to bring a food processing revolution. He said that the country needs post-harvest revolution or food processing revolution, and value addition in 21st century.

Honorable PM Modi said the government has taken various decisions for the benefit of 12 crore small and marginal farmers. These small and marginal farmers would become the driving force of the rural economy, he added.

With the country’s foodgrains production increasing, PM Modi said: “There is a need for post-harvest revolution or food processing revolution, and value additions.” He said it would have been better if food processing was given attention 2-3 decades earlier.

FDI in food processing sector falls 57% to $393 million in FY21

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in food processing sector declined 57 per cent to USD 393.4 million (around Rs 2,926 crore) in 2020-21 as compared to the previous year, the government said on July’2021.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Prahlad Singh Patel said the FDI policy and data are the under purview of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.

“As per extant policy, 100 per cent FDI for FPI sector is permitted under the automatic route implying that no prior approval of the Government or RBI is required. As per the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), the Indian recipient company has to report the inflow of FDI to Reserve Bank of India,” he said.

The FDI received by food processing industries (FPI) sector during 2020-21 stood at USD 393.4 million as against USD 904.7 million in the previous year.

The food processing industry has been slated for accelerated growth. It is projected to be a futuristic industry and it is anticipated that, over the years, it will emerge as a leading player in the global markets. As a result, the industry is seen to be witnessing feverish activity.

Food Processing Market size was valued at USD 143.51 Billion in 2020 and is projected to reach USD 235.67 Billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 6.6% from 2021 to 2028.

Innovation in food processing technology, upsurge in the demand for processed food, and rising research & development in food processing machinery are expected to drive the market over the predicted years.

The true potential of the food processing industry is slowly being realised. This is reflected in the fact that the government has classified food processing industry as a thrust area.

The industry’s gains have been confined mainly to the urban consumers in the domestic market. Of the total production of fruits and vegetables, a mere 2.2% is processed, which is far too low seen from the perspective of what has been achieved by other countries as varied as Thailand (30%), Philippines (78%), Malaysia (80%) and Brazil (70%). Nearly a third of the produce is estimated to be wasted for want of scientifically managed post-harvest care and procedures.

Although relatively significant, the level of processing in other sectors, as well, is also low by developed country standards: marine products, 26%; poultry 6%; beef 20%. The average level of processing in the developed countries ranges between 60 and 70%.
Bakery and Confectionery Products

Ginger Cultivation, Ginger Processing and Ginger Value Added Products

Ginger Cultivation & Storage: Ginger is mentioned in the early literature of China and India as a spice. Thus it is one of the earliest of known spices. It is also used for medicinal purpose.

Ginger Oil: The main application of the ginger oil is in confectionery, beverages, and baked products. The demand of ginger oil is ever increasing whether as beverages in its own right or as a complement to alcoholic drinks such as whisky or rum is estimated to have good increase.

Maize, Corn and its By Products

Maize Starch & Liquid Glucose: Maize starch is the most commonly used carbohydrate found in plants. Industrially, starch is classified into two types viz. natural & modified starch. Maize Wet Milling Process: Maize is the most important raw material for industrial starch. Other products are germ; corn gluten and fiber.
